Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB): Free CFPB FinEx Webinar, New Date, Feb. 22 – Unpacking the Black Wealth Gap

February 1, 2022

You’re invited to a free webinar hosted by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Financial Education Exchange (CFPB FinEx). Through CFPB FinEx, the CFPB offers free publications, tools, and resources to help you work with people in your community who have money questions.

Unpacking the Black wealth gap
New Date: Tuesday, February 22, 2022, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. ET

This is a follow-up to a webinar presented in February 2021. The video recording of last year’s webinar is available on demand and this webinar will provide new information.

In the presentation, you will learn about historical institutionalized credit discrimination practices in America that have caused decades of economic challenges for Black communities and households. Redlining, appraisal bias, and credit discrimination are among the factors that continue to have a negative impact on Black wealth and closing the racial wealth gap. Dr. Charles Nier, Senior Counsel in the Office of Supervision Policy at the CFPB, will join us again this year to present more information on his research into the racial wealth gap. Desmond Brown, Assistant Director for CFPB’s Office of Consumer Education, will speak about CFPB’s resources and efforts to engage traditionally underserved communities.

Varda Hussain, Special Litigation Counsel for Fair Lending at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) will present on the DOJ’s Combatting Redlining Initiative. Redlining is an illegal practice in which lenders avoid lending and providing services to individuals living in communities of color because of the race or national origin of the people who live in those communities.  Join us to hear about how the Department of Justice plans to combat redlining.
